Today is Lexi’s 2nd birthday and I thought what better way to celebrate her first two years than with a blog post!
Lexi actually came into our life as a happy accident, rather than a planned project. I was on the hunt for a pup for my parents, mainly focusing on golden retrievers and so, when I saw a little light cream colored face pop up on my iPhone craigslist posting as Rio and I were waiting in line at Sidecar Doughnuts (which by the way, if you’re ever in San Diego you absolutely have to try) I quickly messaged the host asking if she was still available. I anxiously waited for a reply and eagerly pulled up the full page ad when we got home, only to realize that the golden retriever I thought I inquired about was actually a 3 pound yorkie, poodle, cocker spaniel mix…oops.
While Rio dismissed the thought of this little nugget, I still had her puppy eyes on my mind and while the owner let me know that she was indeed already on hold for another family, many of her brothers and sisters were still available if I wanted to pop by. Like a rookie, I decided to stop by and see the pups on my way to Santa Barbara the next day, telling myself that I was just checking them out for research purposes…yeah right!
When I arrived at the meeting point the Craigslist poster mentioned, I found myself in an open field and wasn’t sure what to think…had I been catfished and more importantly, was I about to be kidnapped? Thankfully, a group of kids of various ages appeared in the distance and as they made their way towards me carrying a big box, I realized that there were indeed 4 small pups inside. The oldest of the group introduced himself as the one I had been emailing with and updated me on the fact that the previous hold on the pup I had inquired about had fallen through and she was up for grabs again.
As the pups were getting taken out of the box and placed on a large blanket in the wet grass, my eyes immediately fell on little Lexi, or Coffee as she had previously been named. While her siblings were sleeping, she was trying her best to rough house with them, pulling their ears and crawling all over them. Her little tail was wagging a million miles a minute and she stub nose was sniffing up a storm. She was perfect!
For the next 30 minutes Lexi and I played in the grass, snuggled and before she feel asleep on my lap we facetimed Rio and asked him if he was ready to be a dad 😊 Of course he said yes, how could he not with that sweet face starring at him while I was head over heels in love! That day I paid Lexi’s deposit and promised to pick her up in 2 weeks time when she would be 8 weeks old. Leaving her behind was the hardest thing and I wasn’t sure if I just paid a group of strangers for a pup I’d never see again or if this was legit…
Over the next couple weeks, Rio and I educated ourselves about what it meant to be dog owners, made her first doctors’ appointments, purchased a crate, applied for pet insurance and more and I’ll never forget the feeling I had as we pulled up to that field again to finally bring our Lexi home. Rio had still never met her, and I was out of my skin excited to see his face when he first laid eyes on her. That was probably one of the best days of our lives and I thanked God for the kid that showed up with her in his arms.
That sweet day changed our lives forever and now, 2 years later we can’t for the life of us remember what we did before Lexi. She is my little sidekick and pretty much goes everywhere I go. She sleeps in a crate next to my side of the bed and runs to me when she’s scared. She loves me unconditionally and trusts me to keep her safe and brings me more joy than I could have ever imagined!
Cheers to many more years, little golden bullet! We love you so much!
